In order to generate a clean hem that looks like a professionally concluded product, it's a good idea to rip the traditional hem out entirely and start fresh. Don't be intimidated about doing this, as you're not destroying anyone that we won't be fixing in mere moments! A seam ripper is the best tool for taking out the traditional hem, although a pair of scissors gets the job done just as well. Once you've taken the stitches out and removed all stray threads, unroll the pants to recapitulate the unfinished edge - you'll note there are about 1 to 2 added inches of fabric hiding up there! Iron the creases out so the pants lie as flat as possible. Next, put the pants on and roll them up to your desired length; regain the newly rolled hem with right pins, being mindful not to prick yourself. Take the pants off, again trying not to prick yourself with the pins.
Iron your new, customized hem to generate a reference crease. Depending on how much fabric you have leftover, you might need to trim some of the excess off (but it's good to leave about 1.5 to 2 inches to work with). After trimming, take out the right pins and unfold the hem; turn the pants inside out - you'll be working with the "wrong" side in order to generate a concluded look on the "right" side. Roll the bottom of your fabric up to the bottom of the ironed crease, and regain this new roll with right pins; iron flat. Take the pins out and fold the fabric over itself once more, creating a polished look that hides the unfinished edge. Use the right pins to regain the folds and iron flat again.
If you're using a sewing engine (the easiest, fastest, most sufficient route), thread the needle and bobbin with a color that matches the stitches on your pants. If you'll be hand-sewing the hem, grab your needle and thread the eye. With the pants still turned inside out, sew colse to the top edge of your pinned folds, manufacture small (approximately 1/8" or 1/4") stitches all the way colse to the leg opening. Clip any excess threads. Repeat the entire process with the other pant leg.
After removing any right pins, you're safe to return your bottoms from their inside-out position. If you followed the above procedure, you should have a newly shortened, professional-looking pair of pants that won't trip you up!
